Why does software content decay faster than any other?

Most industries change on a regulator's or a market's schedule. Software changes on yours, and yours is weekly. Every release note is a list of facts that just stopped being true somewhere on the site: a help article that describes the old setting, a pricing mention that quotes the old plan, a comparison page that lists a feature the competitor now has too.

The content that goes wrong is also the content prospects and customers rely on most. Help docs decide whether a user solves a problem or files a ticket. Comparison and alternative pages decide whether a trial starts. A prospect who finds a stale limit on your pricing page assumes the rest is stale too.

AI answer engines now answer "does X support Y" and "how much does X cost" directly, and they favor sources that are specific and current. A software site whose pages disagree with its own changelog gives them a reason to cite someone else.

What does an outdated software page cost?

The direct cost is measurable in tickets and lost trials. A help article that no longer matches the interface generates support load. A comparison page that misstates a competitor's price loses the prospect who checks, and a pricing mention that quotes a discontinued plan loses the one who does not.

The indirect cost is credibility with the audience that evaluates software for a living. Developers and buyers notice stale docs and read them as a signal about the product. Sites that keep their public content in sync with the product earn the citations and rankings for "X vs Y" and "how to do Z in X" queries; sites that do not hand them to third-party review sites.
